Arctic Base for Long-Range Interceptors MiG-31


Russian Air Force commander General Viktor Bondarev announced his intention to base interceptors MiG-31 beyond the Arctic Circle, reports on October 16, with reference to RIA Novosti. Since 2017, the aircrafts will be based at the airport Tiksi (Sakha Republic), near the mouth of the same name of the river Lena.

In 2015 they begin modernization of the airport, which was closed in 2012. The general also said that it is possible to base also heavy bombers Tu-160 and Tu-95 with accommodation of units of aerospace defense.

Russian Air Force is consistently creating bases in the Far North. Anadyr and Vorkuta continue modernization of airfields, recently the airfields in Tempe and Rogachev were commissioned. These activities are designed to strengthen Russia’s military presence in the Arctic.
